Small People

Two generations ago, the Talt-Vestigen atmospheric filter saved us from climate change. Industry and travel thrive. A hacker friend of yours just chanced across conclusive evidence average child growth is dropping year on year.

Poetry

Across the world, marine biologists and aquaria report Cephalopoda tapping rocks in complex patterns. Patterns that perfectly sync with the rhythms of Nabati poetry.

Mind Fuckery

Yrartnoc, Demon of Broken Mirrors, suffers the opposite of any action directed at him. Many a stupid barbarian has died when an attack instead healed him. Many a smug scholar when a healing spell cast on him instead harmed the caster.

Finally managed to watch A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

An exceptional take on ; the balance of inhuman age and stunted maturation felt creepy-right; and the loneliness was aching.

Also an engaging insight into part of .

And a complex

Loved it so much, I almost watched it again straight away.

Sleeplessness

Advances in neuroscience have made sleep replacement more efficient. Less than four hours of daily overtime is now seen as disloyalty. The Dreamers claim the cost is even greater than mere slavery, but also that vaccines kill.

Missing Things

When you woke this morning, the adults over sixty were gone from the village. Everyone looks at you oddly when you ask, and reminds you Gaffer Michaels died last winter. Next weekend is your mother's sixtieth birthday.

Odd Odours

In what they term a humanitarian gesture, Almester-Veridian have added a bacon scent to the free kibble rations distributed to those on welfare. A rash of disappearances started in your district the day after. All the missing were obese.

Bourgeois

The Cities, bastions against the wastes and horrors left over from the War, maintain a constant population. As a Prole you may work but must leave each evening. Your boss dies in front of you; dare you claim his residency?

Gluttony

The new café around the corner is perfect to get work done. Oddly, the owner looks like one of the background figures in your favourite picture of Elvis. This afternoon, you noticed him in the background of a portrait of Henry VIII.

: Self-Deprecation

A blazing being of swords and eyes struck down Trump on live television. Within minutes, reports came from across the globe of politicians, preachers, and demagogues cut down. Is this divine punishment for hubris or a hellish new weapon?

Otherworldly Fetishes

For the last week, you've dreamt of shadowy figures hanging something from a pole. Each night, the scene is clearer. Two days ago, you made out hieroglyphs Imiut. This morning you realised the body was a giant penguin.

Duncan Jones' "Mute" (2018) is a gritty thriller that relies more on character than surface.

With a pervasive, but not invasive, commentary on both the usual challenges of being mute and the additional ones of a post Siri/Contana world.

: Unusual Textiles

Legend says for months after The Flood receded, the only source of fibres were those shed on Noah's Ark. The only piece of this alleged Perdiluvian Felt known to exist has been stolen. Ecoterrorists have claimed responsibility.

: Musical Instruments

If you make a stringed instrument from your own hair, then your life matches whatever song is played on it - but only while the song is being played. Rumours exist a drum made of your entire skin makes the effect permanent.

: Antidisestablishmentarianism

Monastic rule didn't regulate a monk's time, it regulated time itself. As social media removes the last vestige of alignment with local time, the cycle stumbles. Today, half the world awoke on May 1 and half on May 2. Both groups have apparently objective evidence they are correct about the date.

Dan Gildark's Cthulhu (2007) is an interesting deviation from the after-Gordon/Yunza tendency for films to be spatterpunky or rubber monstrous.

And the semi-implied non-cis protagonist makes for an interesting reframe of 's obsession with purity and repression.

Vampyrer/Not Like Others (2008):

Two sisters, are forced to flee through the streets when one of them kills the leader of a motorcycle gang.

Unlike many vampire films they aren't angsty superhero-ciphers or part of some giant gothic conspiracy. Instead they act like actual sisters struggling to balance independence, family, and needing blood.
