Just before he passed out completely a huge hand descended in front of him, grabbing the girl’s limp body by the arm and lifting her out of view. But something was left behind, something small but distinctly ornate that he couldn't label sitting there where her body had been, and in that last moment of lucidity Tom felt overwhelmingly that it must be the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Paladam hummed a popular song under his breath as he carefully wrote out a neat line of text. His fingers guided the quill with practiced grace.
Next to him, five other books were spread out. The pages fluttered as the same lettering appeared on them. Flecks of magical ink left faint clouds to dust the page as he wrote line after line.
He didn't mind the solitude or the quiet, it was an appropriate way to pass the time of his sentence.
#mficchat One of the things that #fantasy world-building rarely has is functional magic. Usually you have fireballs, lighting bolts, and earth-shattering magic. Rarely do folks have the ability to grow plants, write text, or heat a pot.
I decided that the bulk of magic in Fedran is on that level. Many of the fighters have "useless" magic (specially on Sinmak's crew since he won't hire *anyone* with combat magic because it makes them stupid).

Just saw 卍 in the Federated timeline and I thought I would give other people a heads up: If you see it in Japanese timelines, it's called a MANJI and it is Buddhist symbolism. It has actually been around for thousands of years, used by many different cultures. It was the Nazis who stole and repurposed it.
