@rey i made a proof of concept last year (that doesn't even require the api) it's just no one (well not me) wants to actually deploy such thing because it could be pretty awful for the fediverse
@soft_chomps i suddenly feel more wanted, like a sandwich
is it a lighter bitmessage? i never really looked inside
with a tor-like relay thing so you can have your message just move around the network for half an hour
actually lets make the dht work that way lol
sent to a random node until it gets the right one (and then relayed some more for good measure)
have fun analyzing that traffic
@val and possibly anonymous since it's basically a less messy tor protocol
@val irc but otr everywhere and without the servers
*writing a e2e encrypted and authenticated p2p irc gateway*
why the fuck am i doing this
long time ago i wanted to build a birdsite with channels - basically hashtags, but each status has exactly one, and possibly very few of those available. you'd switch channel like tabs on a timeline and see a whole different plane of things happening
redundancy over activitypub when
like two accounts are synchronized both ways, and people can follow both and their instance will merge the result

maybe mastodon's growth is just not in making users know about mastodon - the software - itself
like we try to pitch a software but what we're really giving most users are instances anyway. maybe for most people to be interested, knowing about mastodon the software should come after knowing their favorite instance
