"How to create a lot of entropy for GPG key generation from command line"
look at this blog title
it's so fucking stupid that it should be enough of an argument for anyone to use urandom
making a gpg key takes 15 minutes
the regular fix is to run a daemon that will pump trash into your entropy pool
because someone was too lazy to add an option to use urandom or use the sane choice by default and no one fixed it in a decade
because gpg is an awful piece of shit
@CobaltVelvet didn't gpg used to use urandom, but some distros has poorly implemented urandoms and this cause a Whole Big Scandal?
@nightpool maybe i don't know about that
@CobaltVelvet are you suggesting it's a good idea to use urandom for key generation?
@webmind @CobaltVelvet well, is urandom a CSPRNG or not?
@webmind @CobaltVelvet Yes, using urandom is fine. This document covers it pretty well: https://www.2uo.de/myths-about-urandom/
@webmind not only suggesting, then saying not doing so is a gross mistake
@CobaltVelvet
This isn't an issue at all on #OpenBSD. GnuPG uses arc4random(3) there, and key generation is instant as a result.
@CobaltVelvet Cover your keyboard in birdseed and leave it on a windowsill.
The unpredictable and chaotic nature of wild birds will create useful entropy.
Done.
