To make a statement on the current debate, I think a list of mandatory CW would be a good start on the instance level.
You can't enforce a rule if there's no explicit rule; you can't expect someone to CW everything you think deserve one without making it explicit.
So what would you want on that list?
@CobaltVelvet Porn, real-life gore (think pictures of a terrorist attack or a warzone), videogames or TV series spoilers
@jkb That's about what I had in mind too!
Excuse me: what is a "CW"? @CobaltVelvet
CW: List of warnings Show more
@CobaltVelvet 1) porn 2) that's it
-The Trump scandal of the day
-Bad news in general, but of course bad is opinion based
-Gore
-Violence
Wouldn't it be possible to auto CW certain words and websites? Ideally with user-defined rules but I guess I should put that on some feature request list.
@CobaltVelvet CW on gore and a X-rated imagery would be a good place to start. I think CWing pics is much more crucial than words. In fact, I'm struggling to think of an example not involving imagery that it would be appropriate to demand CW for across the board.
@ChristianD Pics can be tagged as NSFW, CWs are more related to the discussed topic
Oh, I wasn't realize that. Here's a picture of a cat driving a car.
@CobaltVelvet You might also want to consider that a large fraction of the GNU/Social space /cannot/ comply with CW. Clients/protocols don't support it.
@dredmorbius Yes, my rules are about my instance.
@CobaltVelvet There's also the question of where and how deep you want to go with cultural sensitivity.

@dredmorbius Seriously is there really a need to involve islamophobia into that? I'd take a few minutes to explain why this thread is bullshit but if you're seriously linking that you're already in a deeply worrying loop of self-fulfilling obsession and ignorance
@CobaltVelvet In what way shape or form is posting a list of self-reported items from someone born into an Islamic culture "islamophobic"? What I will point out, though, is that there are sensitivities in all sorts of cultures, and if you're looking to draw bounds, you'll find the task challenging.
@dredmorbius The obsession with Islam and extremists is worrying. I can't give any fuck about what's forbidden by a theorical Islam and won't make it a rule; or any other religion or culture for that matter. Depicting Islam as the worst is just common stupidity.
This is about oppression and trauma, topics that will make many people feel bad for very real reasons they didn't make up or choose.
@CobaltVelvet I didn't pick Islam because it's /bad/ but because there's a great deal within it, /accepted as absolutely normal by most practitioners/, which is highly foreign to Western eyes. It's also about 2 billion people worldwide, approaching 30% of the world's population. A considerable constituency. You're welcome to disregard it, and I'm realising that as an instance Admin (I didn't realise this initially) you likely have your own priorities....
@dredmorbius Good then, because the amount of proud atheists enjoying to kick religion out of everything as a way to show their superiority and consider all muslims as blindly believing extremists is also worrying.
@CobaltVelvet That said, legislating morality is difficult. I'll leave that task to your able hands. Cheers.
@CobaltVelvet I... oh, crap. On an instance level I have NO idea.
On an individual level, I'd ask for the following to be CW'd: anything nsfw, graphic depictions of violence, sexual or otherwise. Descriptions and depictions of structural oppression (‘-isms’) that are graphic and detailed and likely to bring up trauma.
As a courtesy, I tag current events that I perceive as sufficiently traumatizing — normally related to the above.
Putting this as a policy brings up *so* many edge cases tho...
@CobaltVelvet I think NSFW stuff should be, common triggers like abuse probably, and wouldn't object to spoilers or politics/news if people feel strongly about it.
A list, expanded from tn5421's Show more
@CobaltVelvet Might make sense to have a "hard" list of stuff that'll get you in trouble and a "soft" list of stuff that's considered rude to not CW/NSFW.
Hard:
Images of violence or injury
Images designed to induce seizure
Discussion (especially detailed) of rape or other assault
Porn
Soft:
Current events?
Spoilers (TTL: 1 year?)
Bad jokes 😝
@benhamill Yes that's exactly what I'm doing :)
@CobaltVelvet I agree with everyone on the porn, violence, and spoilers. I kind of hate that everyone wants to put politics into that group because I'd like to be able to scroll through a timeline and see the current events without having to click on each post. Also, are we mainly talking about links/previews of news stories or would I have to hide "My senator is a moron" behind CW as well?
@CobaltVelvet most people's suggestions towards sound good.
as to something I'd like to be in the "soft" category would be general neg, talking about how much the world in general or one's life in particular really sucks contributes to the mood issues that are a reason why cw for politics are a good idea. not that i don't ever want to read either, but I'd like some warning.
just my thoughts
@CobaltVelvet There's the obvious stuff around abuse / violence / sexual content, but people have been suggesting politics or other emotionally-charged / polarising topics be included. I think that's probably too much for people to remember.
