You can get a (relatively) cheap laser from https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/ and make your own power supply (a few batteries and <$5 worth of parts)
something like https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes/osram-pltb450b-1-6w-450nm would be plenty powerful for engraving wood.
