so uhh am i the only one who thinks ip addr is much better than ifconfig and ip route is much better than route
- the output that also works as command arguments and mostly makes sense alone
- you can do and undo just by replacing add with del
- arguments mostly aren't positional
@val idk i mean if i want stats i use ip -s addr, if i want addresses i use ip addr, if i want routes i use ip route
i can't think of really needing the three quickly at the same time
@CobaltVelvet ipv4 address, ipv6 address, eth adress
@val $(ip addr) does give me that
@CobaltVelvet oh indeed
@CobaltVelvet I don't care one way or the other
one is a standard tool for the last 40 years on basically every single unix, and the other is linux only unportable garbage
@CobaltVelvet I hate it (for personal reasons), but I have to agree: it's quite good.
@CobaltVelvet
Oh I had no idea about the output matching the input, that's interesting..
@CobaltVelvet I prefer iproute2.
It's syntax is very well thought and i like it's manual too.
@CobaltVelvet Nope, you're not the only one. I'm a fan of it as well.
@CobaltVelvet ip addr has been growing on me more and more since I started binding multiple ip address to an interface.
@CobaltVelvet I also dig it. I haven't typed "ifconfig" in years.
@CobaltVelvet ifconfig shows everything in a single run, though
