@4spooki I really enjoy the music roundups on that site, too!

@Samizdata I'm getting followed by bots designed to follow everyone, so I imagine these federations will get VERY follow happy =P

New hobbie: following people from . Vive le fediverse !

Also, if Mastodon really grows, will the traffic make it prohibitive to run small instances cheaply?

With more and more servers federating and 120,000+ users, I wonder how insane the cross-server traffic is? Does everything federated go through the servers or do users pull from different instances locally?

Still one week to participate to the PicoCTF: picoctf.com/

It's accessible to everyone and if you're a highschooler or a college student there is prizes:

- 1st place: $5,000 + paid trip to Carnegie Mellon University for the top team!
- 2nd place: $2,500
- 3rd place: $1,500
- 4th place: $500
- 5th place: $500
- 6th-10th place: $250

@bradlibum Haha wait is that really how to count in French? To wikipedia!

@CobaltVelvet I think as this platform takes off a lot of people are going to have to figure out these instances aren't free and someone they don't know is in control of everything. Lots of jumping around and splitting populations while people try to agree on instance rules and who they trust. Could be messy =P

@CobaltVelvet I agree with everyone on the porn, violence, and spoilers. I kind of hate that everyone wants to put politics into that group because I'd like to be able to scroll through a timeline and see the current events without having to click on each post. Also, are we mainly talking about links/previews of news stories or would I have to hide "My senator is a moron" behind CW as well?

Friendly reminder that even if you trust your admin, direct messages can be read by them. Private communications should be done via tools designed for this.

Friendly reminder : même si vous faites confiance a votre admin, il peut lire vos messages privés (DM). Les communications privées devraient se faire grace a des outils pensés pour ça.

technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:

Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.

Make sure you trust your admins.

Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.

@PiSquare sounds like they are having trouble just keeping it up right now, too many people getting on Mastodon all at once =P

Ahhh haha my home column was just full of my blabbing and none of the people I follow had tweeted recently, so all I saw was me until I scrolled way down B-)

Wait, so how do I see just the people I am following?

Nice, I was already wrong about dual-posting (tweet-tooting?). Finding plenty of people like @sarahjeong that are posting a bunch on both. Also @danharmon
