Online now! Hoping to talk about crystallography, mabey some roleplaying, being a grad student, or video games. Whatever my audience wants to talk about, all three of you.

Going in to work to do some X-Ray diffraction. If you want to see one of the ways that chemists discover what things are made of, just like science, or just want to find out what I look like and hang out, drop by twitch.tv/canageek in about 45 minutes. #RealTimeChem #Chemistry #Crystallography #XRD #Chem #Science
@TheDiscordian @Canageek I updated the server info so it's clear we're more of an RPG-oriented Mastodon instance and less of an OSR-specific Mastodon instance.
So, are there any other Call of Cthulhu players out there? That is the game I've spent the most time running. Love the system, have a half-done RPG in my head that takes a lot of inspiration from it.
Question:
Years ago when I fixed more computers I kept a copy of a Knoppix CD handy. It worked quite well, but seemed to be updating less and less. But I moved on from doing that and so didn't keep up.
Recently I needed to fix a computer, so I set up a XBuntu flash drive. Worked, but SUPER slow. Not snappy like Knoppix was.
So what is the current fast running, optimized live distro? Is Knoppix still the best for that? #Linux #Knoppix
What makes for a good adventure hook? Specifically, what makes for a good, concise hook/rumor?
Incidentally, guess who needs to write like 60 hooks for a set of tables?
That said, I'm generally not a fan of modern narrative games: I tend to prefer my mechanics based in the physics of the world, rather then based on some loose idea of a good narrative. I've run The Pool a couple of times, and found it works well as a beer and pretzles game, but prefer GURPS, D&D, Cthulhu, Alternity, etc for serious games.
Have been invited to do the inside cover of the issue of the scientific journal my paper will be printed in. Looking for people to privately give me feedback on it, preferably with experience in science (or cover design) #RealTimeChem #Chemistry #Science #Publishing #Art
Also, I did a very simple and interesting reaction that happens when you put uranyl in light with water around, and while this has been known for a long time, to do it on a useful scale you normally need to add some powerful chemicals, and I did it without those.
So I've combined these in a number of ways that haven't been done before, and this is interesting as there has been very little work in this area with uranium, and if we know enough about how uranium and other things like to stick together we can start designing useful materials made of these things.
The building blocks I'm using are a gold compound known as "Dicyanoaurate" and a uranium compound known as uranyl.
Dicyanoaurate is a long stick made of gold and cyanide that links to other things at the ends. Uranyl is a stick as well, made of uranium and oxygen. However, it likes to attach to other things around its middle.
Non-scientist explanation of my paper:
Coordination polymers are a class of material where I take a couple of units and link them together into a larger structure. Think of lego, where I can take two different shapes and link them into a larger structure. In this case, I'm making long stacks of them, or chains. So think of me linking together a bunch of 2x2 green lego squares and 2x4 black lego rectangles. #RealTimeChem #Chem #Chemistry #Science
My first primary author paper has been published! http://doi.org/10.1039/C7DT00942A "Dicyanoaurate-based heterobimetallic uranyl coordination polymers" #RealTimeChem
Going online with Crystallography streaming at twitch.tv/Canageek --Come and join and see what happens when you give a chemist access to x-ray equipment and crystals that need their structure determined. #RealTimeChem
@Canageek It's also insane on FF mobile for me.

Hugh: You probably can't imagine what it is like to be so lost and frightened that you will listen to any voice which promises change.
Worf: Even if that voice insists on controlling you?
Hugh: That's what we wanted. Someone to show us the way out of confusion. Lore promised clarity and purpose.

Question: When you say a party starts at 7 pm, what time do you expect people to start showing up? As a Canadian I'm used to 7:30-8:30 pm. I'm told Miami that means "think about heading out about 8:30" and the Brits I know interpret it as "Be there right at 7 pm"
So what do you expect and where are you from that you learned that?
