Can anyone give me information on the protocols #mastodon implements? What would it take to build a minimal alternative server? #mastodondev

@Canageek I'm aware that it "implements GNU Social", but I'm having a hard time finding any information whatsoever about what that means. GNU Social's own website is particularly useless--all it tells you is that it merged with StatusNet in 2013. I'm trying to figure out what GNU Social is. I've also gathered that part of GNU Social is the OStatus protocol, but I don't know if that's a subset of GNU social, or if it's the primary/only protocol of interest. :/
