"Y-yeah, sounds good, thanks again," Ella gulped. Despite knowing how big mermaids were, nothing could've prepared her for the sheer awesomeness of meeting one in person.

"You're quite far out. How'd that happen?"

"Fell asleep," Ella said, sheepishly.

"No life-vest?"

"Was working on my tan," Ella practically baa'd.

"Hm... you've learned a lesson then... sorry, what's your name?"

"...Ella."

"Ella. I'm Borda. Next time, catch rays on the beach, yeah?"

"Gotcha," Ella promised, smitten.

Ella almost swallowed water in surprise, clutching at the brown, speckled fingers as thick as her arm. Within a few blinks, she was out of the water, gasping for air. Her catamaran had drifted further away than she realized.

"You okay there, human?" asked the concerned owner of the huge hand holding her afloat.

"Thuh-uh," Ella choked, pushing wet hair out of her eyes, nodding weakly at her rescuer, "Thuh... thanks."

"No problem - lets get you back on your boat and back to shore, hey?"

The bubbles are going the wrong way, Ella mused, far too calmly.
Oh no wait, it's me, I'm going the wrong way, she realized, her sense of calm vanishing instantly.

Ella clawed fruitlessly against the current. She didn't even remember falling overboard.
If I die, that'll teach me to fall asleep sunbathing, without a life-vest, she thought, lungs aching as the surface grew more distant.

A huge hand wrapped around her waist.

I always dream of being underwater. Sometimes puddles, sometimes streams, sometimes lakes, but most often the sea because I'd seen more media that explored it. I had no real love or compulsion to BE underwater, it just... happened.

And no matter what I'd meet the same group of merfolk; mostly friends, some rivals, even a love interest sometimes. I'd have a fish tail too.

So yes, technically, I have wet dreams but not how most people do.

"Us?"

"Yes. I was accidentally summoned some time in the 70s... none of the hippies noticed so I just went my own way."

"Wait you're telling this to me straight up? Isn't that dangerous?"

"What could you or anyone you know do to a Powerful Ancient Being?"

"G-good point... wait there isn't ANYTHING that could... overpower you... or something?"

"Perhaps - I'm not telling you though."

"Wait, then why are you always late for... everything?"

"Human time is REALLY hard for PABs to comprehend."

The children peered into the forest stream, watching the small silvery figures darting about just below the surface.

"Are they fairies?" asked the youngest, whispering in awe.

"They're aquatic and have fishtails; they're mermaids," said the oldest, whispering so not to be detected.

"But they're so small; aren't mermaids bigger?"

"Clearly ocean ones are big, and forest ones are small."

The youngest accepted this explanation.

The two boys gazed up at the poster of their hero.
"When I grow up, "said one, "I want to be just like him."
"And when I grow up I wanna marry him," said the other.
"...You can't do that!,"exclaimed the first boy.
"Why not?"
"'Because he already HAS a husband."
"I know... that's why I think I have a chance."
"I can't believe my best friend wants to be a home-wrecker."
"What if... when you become him, I just marry you instead?"
"Oh. Okay!"

"FINALLY, I thought you wouldn't ever stop asking questions. You were starting to sound like some of the jerks on the internet who just tell me I need to move - with what money I might ask - instead of actually helping me--"

The genie granted her a strong, fearsome body, and as a bonus, also granted her a distant, rent-free home where food was plentiful, and the internet signal was surprisingly good.

The zookeepers were mystified where the new crocodile had come from, but kept her anyway.

Ah spring time. For some it means flowers and sunshine. For others, when the street becomes a lake.

The queen stared at her raw, ruined hands.

She allowed her most trusted handmaid to gently wash off the blood and sweat. Once dried, she donned a pair of silk gloves - she knew how how to hide her scars and pain, smiling and unflinching if her hand was grasped or kissed.

The usurper who had murdered her husband and children would soon find out that before she'd been bestowed her crown, his willowy new bride had been known as the Battleaxe.

I drew some cards of my ridiculous son to thank Ezra and Laurel's parents for helping us with our farm dreams. ONE thing off the to-do list anyway!

The lighthouse keeper stole down to the beach, tide high and moon bright.

He carefully stepped stone to stone, towards the small star shaped island - mostly rock and a single stunted fir.

He waited, but not for long.
A graceful merman climbed up to his side, satchel heavy with opulent gifts salvaged from sunken chests.

But all the lighthouse keeper cared for were the strong arms and salty lips of his secret oceanborn lover.

Finished the flowers, leaves, and arches doily from an old Slavic language magazine. It isn't laying flat, partially because it was a ripply pattern to begin with, but I left it outside in the heat to block and I think it dried too quickly to settle into its stretched shape. I might try reblocking it with pins, but for now it looks pretty good draped over this chair. #crochet #fiberarts

"Coder, what is best in life?"

Coder: "To crush your issues list, see them disappear before you, and to hear the merging of their pull requests!"

In a hidden jungle, freshwater merfolk inhabit the long, deep rivers and the shallow mangrove swamps, sleeping in shady branches, basking in the abundant warm rainfall. Their diet consists of fruits and vegetables; supplemented by the occasional reptile, fish or mammal - if they're ever motivated enough - but the fruit is so plentiful, they usually don't bother.

One day they find an orphaned human child, and raise it as their own...
