In a hidden jungle, freshwater merfolk inhabit the long, deep rivers and the shallow mangrove swamps, sleeping in shady branches, basking in the abundant warm rainfall. Their diet consists of fruits and vegetables; supplemented by the occasional reptile, fish or mammal - if they're ever motivated enough - but the fruit is so plentiful, they usually don't bother.

One day they find an orphaned human child, and raise it as their own...

"Sorry about Ensign Furgie, she has a way of getting underfoot."

The black cat exposed her belly as she flopped from side to side, batting away the Earth Captain's hands with gentle paws.

"You coexist harmoniously with an honored Earth Feline. We are pleased by this."

A wide eyed waif stared up at the demon; wary and uncertain. The demon remained motionless, waiting for the child to speak. By the creek, the other children continued to play, untroubled and boisterous.

Emboldened by this fact, the waif asked,"You're a demon, why do you care for us?"

The demon's irreversibly damaged wings trembled slightly. "Because I understand what it's like to be mistreated and forsaken by one's creators," he whispered.
