I love it when the teachers realize the quirky things I do in class are actually linguistically significant and ask the kids (who often only notice the quirkiness) to try to figure out WHY I'm doing those things. For example, raising and lowering my hand to indicate syllable stress (which can be very hard for Japanese people to pick up on naturally) during vocab practice.

So , my formerly-stray , has finally realized I will pet her any time she wants. Up till now she's sort of been a skeptic of the idea of affection for the sake of affection.

Even if I'm rarely myself, it's nice to have a kitchen that is. I was able to make happened out of random junk in the fridge and cupboards instead of going back out in the rain after an exhausting day at work.

Still need to figure out a good way to grill eggplant in the fish-grilling drawer, though. The first two attempts have been, well...less than successful.

I finally got myself a name seal for documents and stuff. As a foreigner in , I can't just find my last name on a pre-made seal, so I knew I had to get a custom one.

I put it off for 3 years (I really put the "pro" in "procrastination") because I thought it would require placing an order and then going back to pick it up.

Turns out a seal-making shop can do one up in 10 minutes, and you can pick the look you want and have them adjust everything to your exact specifications. Oops.

There is another person in the house, and we are very angry about that.

I mostly speak to my . Just now she was making this weird, plaintive mewing, so I asked her what was wrong in .

As a teacher in , I guess it's become reflexive for me use Japanese to try to help anything small and distressed.

Brains are peculiar.

Today was the official opening of the showering-twice-a-day season for me. Ugh, humidity.

And it's random-derangement-o'clock in time again. Today's derangement: attacking the corners of things. Chairs. Boxes. Flashcards. Floor cushions. All corners are suspicious and must be clawed or pounced on.

Today I participated in culture by working 9.5 hours without any break other than a quick lunch.

And then, on the way home, I participated even more by picking up an item a student had dropped, going back to school, and handing it over to one of the regular teachers.

After that, I delighted an elementary school student (not one of mine) by yelling at the jerk who almost ran over both of us with his truck—which was perhaps not the Japanese thing to do, but satisfying all the same.

My thumbnail is tearing across the nail bed. The expensive nail repair material I got to fix it keeps failing. It's not flexible enough.

Little patches of cloth tape work fine, though. The tape is flexible, sturdy, waterproof and readily available at the schools where I work.

The only downside is that it gets gummed up with lint and cat hair within a day and needs replacing.

But at least it doesn't come off at random!

It's random-derangement-o'clock in time again. Today's derangement: running sideways through the apartment with one's tail poofed out and curled like an S on its side. Bonus derangement: not looking where one is going and crashing into doors and walls.

My , , has extremely glittery fur. It almost has a holographic effect. Alas, the glitter doesn’t show up in photos.

Me: I wonder how long this nail glue takes to dry.
Me: *glues thumb to nail powder container by mistake*
Me: Okay, pretty much instantly then.
Me: *pulling thumb off nail powder container* Also, ow.

So Nikki, the new I was trying out, decided she hated my house so much that she went on a hunger strike until I returned her to the rescue. Sad now.
