Apparently it's random-derangement-o'clock in #cat time. I now have a 10cm scratch down my forearm arm because my furry little houseguest was aiming for her toy ball and managed to miss it by over half a meter, landing on me instead.
There's still this #stray #cat living with me. The other day I gave her a small shred of the beef jerky I was eating without considering how much pepper it had on it.
She was eager to try it, but immediately spat it out. Then she started hitting it, as if to punish it for stinging her with its spice.
I've been studying #Japanese for over 20 years now (at various degrees of commitment). In the US I developed a habit of making ironic wisecracks to myself in Japanese when I didn't want to be understood.
Even after 3 years of living in #Japan, I still sometimes forget that I can't do that here.
At least I give people a laugh now and then.
Today was my last day for the year at one of my elementary schools. Or, if I'm not assigned there again, my last day there ever. (*sniffle*)
I got to make silly activities for the kids. The best was "Where is the restroom?" The kids split into teams. Members of each team took turns carrying a "poop" (a bottle cap) between their legs and, without using their hands, depositing it in their team's "toilet" (a box) at the other end of the room. Scandalous fun.
@reibeatall
Well, it's Sunday over here. Spent the morning putting up "found cat" posters all over my neighborhood. Now I'm heading off to a cat cafe that I frequent to chill with some kittens and ask the staff's advice on what to do if the posters don't get any response.
@memnus
Give Hardwick's Hardware over by the UW a call. I dunno for sure they'd have tiny magnets, but that's the first place I'd try.
I swear, vets are the nicest people in #Japan.
I'm trying to reunite a stray #cat with its owner and having a tough time. Took the cat to the vet in the meantime to check for parasites, get leukemia & FIV (cat AIDS) tests, and an age estimate.
She had ear mites—now treated—but is otherwise in perfect health.
Because she's a stray, the vet gave me a 50% discount. FIFTY PERCENT. I mean, damn.

I'm glad I stuck with learning Japanese. Like most nerds, I started because of manga and anime. Now I use it for things I never could have imagined.
Today, for example, one of my junior high students wanted me to explain how Americans decide who is a white person and who is a black person.
While I still enjoy the nerdy things, it's great to be able to connect with people and help them make sense of the world.
@plesuvius
Definitely worth it, but keep the cat indoors or leash-train it and escort it outside. Cats given free-run of the outdoors face soooo many risk factors.
Any competent shelter can set you up with a cat that's known to be content with indoor-only living, and they'll encourage it, too.
Also, consider either getting two cats or, if you're set on just the one, ask for a cat known to be antisocial with other cats so you won't risk it being lonely for its own kind.

My favorite part about speaking English as a native language is having to explain all its weird rules at a moment’s notice. In my second language.
Sometimes I just gotta be like, “Damned if I know. I’ll get back to you on that one.”

As an American living abroad, I'd be able to get used to centigrade so much faster if I could just find a weather app or site that let me display both scales at once instead of forcing me to go into options to swap between them.

I only ever played 1 and a bit of 2 (2 and 3 respectively in Japan), and clunky doesn't even begin to cover it.
But there's definitely a continuity of vision. KF1 is one of the few games I played to completion more than once. When I found Dark Souls, I had no idea it was from the same developer, but it brought back all those King's Field feels.
@benofbrown
If you weren't aware, those roots go back even further—all the way to 1994. The King's Field series is considered the spiritual predecessor to the Souls series.
That bad drug's name is "horseshoe theory," and it's unfortunately quite popular these days.
My apartment prohibits pets, so I visit a certain cat cafe about once a week.
It's amazing just how many people have no idea how to pick up or hold a cat.
Since the cafe doubles as a rescue and most of the cats are adoptable, I make it my mission to teach other customers how to handle cats. That way, they can have a positive experience and might be more inclined to adopt.
And it makes the cats so much happier too.

I'm no expert; that's just what I've seen. No doubt, like all religions, there are individual practitioners who make it their own thing rather than trying to manipulate others.
But the recruiters? They might think they're doing the right thing, but they're really testing for how easily someone can be controlled and abused.
I’ve seen the sort of questions they ask before. Most of them are the same thing rephrased in slightly different ways, and they’re based around figuring out your satisfaction with your current life, how much money you have, how easily you succumb to peer pressure, and whether you already have people in your life who could offer emotional support.
