Definitely worth it, but keep the cat indoors or leash-train it and escort it outside. Cats given free-run of the outdoors face soooo many risk factors.
Any competent shelter can set you up with a cat that's known to be content with indoor-only living, and they'll encourage it, too.
Also, consider either getting two cats or, if you're set on just the one, ask for a cat known to be antisocial with other cats so you won't risk it being lonely for its own kind.
