In the past I've slightly disparaged Mastodon/ActivityPub's data model & replication protocol, compared to aforementioned Dat, IPFS, Secure Scuttlebutt, BitTorrent DHT, et al., but have concluded that, for me and some friends (small N), Mastodon has succeeded tremendously in providing a home where I don't have to worry about "the rando problem" that substack is struggling with:

@22 those bums are so annoying. I dont understand why ssb doesn’t have “friend only” privacy settings for posts... even diaspora has that shit
@XavierJulep Hmm, you could encrypt messages with the public keys of your friends, which would be pretty easy to do client-side (like most things on SSB).
@22 yeah i was thinking 1 key pair shared among friends as a 'group key'. Like if I sent you my private key
