Excerpts from upcoming book "Pandora's Lab" in this month's National Geographic Magazine. Science marches on but at any given time it can be either wrong or wrongly used. The best meta-protection is actually diversity, I think. I am meta-happy we had people who dropped butter for margerine & people who poohpoohed the federal advice and stuck to butter. Sometimes though the damage is universal (DDT).
@22 I'd possibly add thalidomide to that list of nasties, although it didn't outright kill people.
