so do any mastodon mobile apps do push notifications yet?

i'm using mastalab rn and i'm pretty sure it only does pull notifications? i don't see any of the other apps mentioning that they do push and i reckon that's something they'd be bragging about if they had it? hmm

@porsupah gasp!! that's what i get for steadfastly ignoring all mastodon apps that aren't open source i guess

hm. it sounds like they're achieving those push notifications in a rather unscrupulous way, idk if i'm comfortable with that play.google.com/store/apps/det

@00dani Wouldn't that be required for the function?

@porsupah i don't think so? it MIGHT be necessary for the actual notifications to go thru tootdon servers to be delivered (e.g., instance -> webhook -> tootdon -> your phone) but that should be entirely achievable without giving them your whole access token :/

@porsupah and actually, you don't need the notifications' content to go thru their servers either! it'll work just as well if you send an empty "ping" as a push notification and have the app pull down the actual content locally, which is apparently what amaroq does

amaroq is ios-exclusive sadly tho

@00dani I'm pretty sure Mastalab actually does push notifications? Can confirm Tootdon definitely does however. I believe Pawoo also seems to, and Subway Tooter seems to have the option buried in here somewhere.

@sky hmm, my mastalab notifications always seem to arrive in delayed batches, as though it's just pulling them every few minutes :/ maybe it's my instance at fault or something, idk

@00dani Not sure! I'm definitely not a technical user but when I installed it it asked me which toots I wanted to receive Push Notifications for, and after a look through the settings I couldn't find any options for setting a pull interval.

@sky hmm. did you install mastalab from f-droid or from google play? because it just occurred to me that the f-droid version might not support push notifications, since a lot of android apps use google cloud messaging for that :o

@00dani I have the Google Play version, that would make sense.

@sky hm. there goes that idea. i definitely AM a technical user so i checked mastalab's source code for any use of google cloud messaging (or its replacement, firebase cloud messaging) and nada :/

hmmmmmm

@00dani A mystery... I guess at least Firefox Mobile gives me pretty consistent notifs from the web UI, so that might be an option? I personally find it a bit more clunky than an app but.

@00dani i use the progressive web app (add to desktop) and it works AMAZINGLY for this kind of stuff. haven't looked into other native apps though sorry :(

@nightpool !!!! the pwa provides push notifications???? gasp...... that's brilliant

@00dani yes it does!!! web notifications are the future baby
